Nun Admits to Stealing $128K from Churches

Is becoming a nun an act of rebellion? It just might be.
Sure, nuns might all take the same vows, but they can lead very different lives. The sweet-faced gatekeepers at convents must often accept and work against the stereotypes used to classify them.
But one Roman Catholic nun recently shattered the cookie-cutter image of saintly women by pleading guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny.

Sister Mary Anne Rapp, 67, who has been a nun for nearly 50 years, was accused of stealing a total of $128,000 from St. Mark’s Church in Kendall and St. Mary’s Church in Holley, New York between 2006 and 2011. Not only is intentional stealing a mortal sin, it’s also illegal. Her M.O. was always the same: use church funds to try and win big!
According to WIVB News 4, Sister Rapp used the funds to support her high-roller gambling habit at Seneca Niagara Casino.

“A lot of these were checks, so it was pretty easy to discover. The Diocese does a great job of auditing on a periodic basis and it was a result of that audit that this was discovered,” explained Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone.
Last year, after discrepancies were discovered during this audit, she was placed on administrative leave.
Sister Rapp faces a sentence of up to six-months in jail and fiver years probation. She will be sentenced in July. Unfortunately, for this nun, her bad habit landed her in purgatory.
