ABUTH launches urological surgery without knife cut

The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria yesterday launched a new form of urological surgery, which entails an operation without cutting patient’s body; the first of its kind in the hospital and other parts of Nigeria.
Flagging off the “cut-less” urological surgery of removing prostrate, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Lawal Khalid, said the essence of introducing surgery without cutting the patient’s body is to launch the hospital into the 21st century where surgeries are being conducted based on modern technologies.
“Today, we are making history in this hospital. It is a day that we shall live to remember. Endoscopic urological surgery has come to stay in this hospital. It is a form of carrying out an operation without having to cut anybody; it does not require the knife. We’ve been hearing about this for a long time, we thank God that today it is at our door steps”, Professor Khalid said.
Also speaking, the consultant and Chief Urologist of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), who is also the facilitator of the surgery, Professor Sani Alhassan, described the new development as the “gold standard” of modern world.
“Trans-uriteral process is the gold standard now for removing prostate comparable to any other method. This has been in practice since 1950s in the developed countries,” Professor Alhassan said.
